TULSA, OK – Un hombre de Sand Springs que secuestró y amenazó con matar a una antigua compañera sentimental fue condenado hoy en un tribunal federal, anunció el fiscal federal interino Clint Johnson.

El juez de distrito Gregory K. Frizzell sentenció a Michael Joseph Pointer, de 43 años, a 15 años de prisión federal seguidos de cinco años de libertad supervisada.

Pointer se declaró culpable en mayo de 2021 de robo de auto; secuestro en territorio indio; y portar, usar y disparar un arma de fuego durante y en relación con un delito de violencia. Según documentos judiciales y audiencias, Pointer tenía un historial de amenazas y actos de violencia.

En un acuerdo de culpabilidad por escrito, Pointer admitió que el 3 de abril de 2020 secuestró a una antigua pareja sentimental utilizando la fuerza y la intimidación. El acusado amenazó con matar a la víctima y a su familia en un “baño de sangre” y disparó su escopeta contra la víctima, fallando por poco en su cabeza. En ese momento, Pointer sabía que tenía prohibido poseer un arma de fuego debido a su anterior condena por un delito grave.

Luego, Pointer tomó a la víctima y su minivan Mercury, llevándola por Tulsa en contra de su voluntad. En un momento, la víctima pudo separarse de Pointer y correr hacia una tienda de conveniencia donde se escondió en un baño. Un empleado de la tienda llamó a las autoridades. Los agentes de policía de Tulsa respondieron a la llamada, localizaron el vehículo y realizaron una parada de tráfico. Los oficiales descubrieron una escopeta de calibre 12 y municiones en el vehículo.

En su audiencia de sentencia, la fiscal adjunta Chantelle Dial declaró que Pointer mostraba un patrón creciente de violencia doméstica desde 2005. Señaló acusaciones anteriores de abuso, incluyendo un incidente en el que Pointer estranguló a su pareja. Sand Springs man sentenced for kidnapping a former girlfriend

TULSA, OK — A Sand Springs man who kidnapped and threatened to kill a former dating partner was sentenced today in federal court, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson.

U.S. District Judge Gregory K. Frizzell sentenced Michael Joseph Pointer, 43, to 15 years in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release.

Pointer pleaded guilty in May 2021 to carjacking; kidnapping in Indian Country; and carrying, using, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. According to court documents and hearings, Pointer had a history of threats and acts of violence.

In a written plea agreement, Pointer admitted that on April 3, 2020, he kidnapped a former dating partner using force and intimidation. The defendant threatened to kill the victim and her family in a ‘bloodbath’ and fired his shotgun at the victim, narrowly missing her head. At that time, Pointer knew he was prohibited from possessing a firearm because of his previous felony conviction.

Pointer then took the victim and her Mercury minivan, driving her around Tulsa against her will. At one point, the victim was able to break away from Pointer and run into a convenience store where she hid in a bathroom. A store employee called authorities. Tulsa Police officers responded to the call, located the vehicle, and conducted a traffic stop. Officers discovered a 12-gauge shot gun and ammunition in the vehicle.

At his sentencing hearing, Assistant U.S. Attorney Chantelle Dial stated that Pointer exhibited an escalating pattern of domestic violence since 2005. She noted previous allegations of abuse, including an incident where Pointer strangled an intimate partner. Dial suggested that based on domestic violence statistics, those strangulation allegations coupled with his use of a firearm during the kidnapping made it far more likely Pointer would kill his next intimate partner.
