El piloto británico Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), siete veces campeón del mundo de Fórmula 1, reveló que está “en proceso” para incluir en su apellido el de soltera de su madre Carmen Larbalestier. “Estoy realmente orgulloso del nombre de mi familia. El nombre de mi madre es Larbalestier y estoy a punto de ponerlo en mi nombre. No entiendo la idea de que cuando la gente se casa, la mujer pierda su apellido, y quiero que el nombre de mi madre continúe junto con el nombre de Hamilton y espero que ello ocurra pronto”, explicó el inglés en declaraciones realizadas en la Expo Dubai 2020 recogidas por la agencia DPA
El padre de la leyenda del automovilismo, Anthony, y su madre, Carmen, se separaron cuando él tenía dos años y el piloto invitó a su madre a verlo recibir el título de caballero de manos del Príncipe Carlos en el Castillo de Windsor en diciembre pasado. “Estamos trabajando en ello”, admitió Hamilton que se prepara para su 16ª temporada en la F1 en la que quiere “vengar” la derrota del año pasado ante el neerlandés Max Verstappen.
El heptacampeón mundial se refirió al inicio de la temporada del próximo domingo en el Gran Premio de Bahrein y subrayó que la carrera “va a ser difícil”. “Solo espero que cuando reciba la llamada esta noche de los técnicos del auto hayan encontrado algunos trucos y formas de extraer más del coche; porque somos y debemos seguir siendo el mejor equipo”, detalló.
En otro orden, Hamilton aseguró que no planea emular a otros grandes deportistas como Tom Brady y Roger Federer, quienes continuaron en actividad a los 40 años. “No he pensado en ese número porque tengo 37. Cielos, todavía me queda un poco”, comentó entre risas. “Así que honestamente no he pensado en eso, y no planeo estar aquí cerca de esa edad”, agregó.
El británico tiene contrato con Mercedes hasta el término de la próxima temporada, cuando tendrá 38 años. Ese acuerdo por dos años fue firmado en julio del año pasado y no se sabe si el piloto lo extenderá.
Brady, de 44 años, es considerado el mejor quarterback en la historia de la NFL, mientras que el 20 veces campeón de Grand Slam tendrá 41 si vuelve a jugar a finales del verano, tal como lo tiene planeado tras someterse a una cirugía de rodilla.
Otro ejemplo es el del exuberante y prolífico Zlatan Ibrahimovic, quien recientemente volvió a las canchas con el Milan luego de sufrir una lesión. El sueco de 40 años está jugando bien en su búsqueda por el título de la Serie A.
Hamilton, por su parte, posee el récord de más victorias en la F1 con 103 y de más pole positions con 103 y está empatado con otro grande del deporte, Michael Schumacher, con una cantidad récord de siete títulos.
El bicampeón de la Máxima, Fernando Alonso, tiene 40 años y el español sigue conduciendo bien para el equipo de Alpine, asegurando un podio a finales de la temporada pasada. Además, Kimi Raikkonen siguió retrasando el reloj hasta retirarse al final de la temporada pasada, con 42 años.
Pero con sus amplios intereses en la moda, la música y su continua dedicación a temas medioambientales y de derechos humanos, parece que Hamilton probablemente no estará en la pista cuando tenga su edad. “Con suerte, tendré alguna otra cosa en la que ocuparme”, concluyó ante los periodistas en las pruebas de pretemporada en Bahrein.

Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he is in the process of changing his name so that it incorporates his mother’s surname Larbalestier.
Hamilton, speaking at the 2022 Dubai Expo before he begins his fight for a record eighth Formula 1 world championship this weekend at the Bahrain GP, said he wants his “mum to continue on with the Hamilton name”.
“I’m really proud of my family’s name, Hamilton,” said the 37-year-old. “None of you might know that my mum’s name is Larbalestier and I am just about to put that in my name.
“I don’t fully understand the idea that when people get married the woman loses their name.
“I really want my mum to continue on with the Hamilton name.”
Hamilton’s mother Carmen Larbalestier, now Lockhart, separated from his father Anthony Hamilton when the future F1 world champion was two years old.
Hamilton mostly grew up with his father and stepmother Linda, and has frequently highlighted his family bond in recent years.
“It would mean the world to my family [to win an eighth title],” said Hamilton.
Asked when the name change could be complete, Hamilton added: “Hopefully soon, I don’t know if it will be this weekend… but we are working on it.”
‘Hamilton name change for all the right reasons’
Asked about the incoming name change on Sky Sports News, Sky F1 commentator David Croft called it “fantastic”.
“Lewis is so attached to his dad because of their background and the karting weekends, and the bond that came through racing,” said Croft. “But he has also got a huge bond with his mum, he loves her to bits.
“I think it’s brilliant that he’s going to take her name and well done, Lewis. He’s doing it for all the right reasons.
“Obviously his mum and dad have been separated for many, many years but they both come to the same races, we see them both together and I think it’s fantastic what he’s doing.”
