Héroe local recibe la llave de la ciudad / Local hero receives key to the city
TULSA, OK — El alcalde Bynum entregó la llave de la ciudad de Tulsa al residente Gary Brooks el jueves 25 de agosto. Brooks fue calificado de “héroe local” después de haber salvado la vida de un conductor de transporte público de Tulsa la semana pasada, ya que el conductor fue atacado por alguien que entró en el autobús y lo asaltó.
Brooks estaba fuera de su casa cuando vio el asalto y llamó a la policía. Posteriormente entró en el autobús para ayudar al conductor, deteniendo el asalto.
El alcalde explicó lo sucedido:
“La semana pasada Gary Brooks estaba trabajando cuando vio que un autobús de Tulsa Transit se salía de la carretera y se detenía”, dijo Bynum. “Se acercó al autobús y miró por la ventana donde observó a un asaltante golpeando al conductor intentando matarlo. Gary trató de abrir la puerta del autobús, pero estaba cerrada con llave. Corrió hacia la parte trasera del autobús y convenció a los aterrorizados pasajeros de que abrieran la salida de emergencia para poder entrar. Mientras se dirigía a la parte delantera del autobús, me dijo “Dios me dio la fuerza que necesitaba”. Puso al agresor (que había seguido golpeando al conductor) con un candado de cabeza y lo tiró al suelo, sujetándolo hasta que llegó la policía. El conductor recibió atención médica inmediata, y aún se está recuperando de la agresión”.
El alcalde Bynum elogió la rápida y desinteresada actuación de Brooks.
“Según todos los indicios, Gary Brooks salvó la vida de ese conductor”, dijo el alcalde. “Es un héroe, y hoy -para mostrar el agradecimiento de todos los tulsanos por su heroísmo- le he entregado la Llave de la Ciudad”.
El conductor de Tulsa Transit se está recuperando en su casa. La llave de la ciudad es una forma simbólica de que el alcalde muestre su gratitud por las acciones y contribuciones de alguien. El director general de Tulsa Transit, Scott Marr, también estuvo presente en la ceremonia.
Local hero receives key to the city
TULSA, OK — Mayor Bynum presented the key to the City of Tulsa to resident Gary Brooks on Thursday, August 25. Brooks was called a “local hero” after he saved the life of a Tulsa transit driver last week as the driver was attacked by someone who entered the bus and assaulted him.
Brooks was outside his house when he saw the robbery and called the police. He later entered the bus to help the driver, stopping the assault.
The mayor explained what happened:
“Last week Gary Brooks was working when he saw a Tulsa Transit bus run off the road and come to a stop,” Bynum said. “He went up to the bus and looked through the window, only to see an assailant beating the driver to death. Gary tried to open the bus door but it was locked. He ran to the back of the bus and convinced terrified passengers to open the emergency exit so he could enter. As he headed toward the front of the bus, he told me ‘God gave me the strength I needed’. He put the assailant (who had continued beating the driver) in a head lock and brought him down to the ground, restraining him until police arrived. The driver received immediate medical attention, and is still recovering from the attack.”
Mayor Bynum praised Brooks’ quick and selfless actions.
“By all accounts, Gary Brooks saved that driver’s life,” the mayor said. “He is a hero, and today – to show the thanks of all Tulsans for his heroism – I presented him with the Key to the City.”
The Tulsa Transit driver is recovering at home. The key to the city is a symbolic way for the mayor to show gratitude for someone’s actions and contributions. Tulsa Transit General Manager Scott Marr was also present at the ceremony.
