El sexto título mundial de Brasil tendrá que esperar: la Croacia de Luka Modric venció en los penales (1-1, 4-2) a los suramericanos, este viernes en los cuartos de final de la Copa del Mundo de Qatar, y avanzó por segunda vez consecutiva a la semifinal del torneo.

Nikola Vlasic, Lovro Majer, Modric y Mislav Orsic anotaron por los europeos, subcampeones en Rusia-2018, mientras que Rodrygo Silva y Marquinhos erraron sus disparos en el estadio Education City.

Con una actuación portentosa, coronada con un penal atajado a Rodrygo en la tanda decisiva, el arquero croata Dominik Livakovic volvió a ser el héroe de su selección y acabó con el sueño de Brasil de una sexta estrella.

Croacia sobrevivió al ataque brasileño

Con sus atajadas fue el artífice de que Croacia sobreviviera al ataque brasileño y que la clasificación para semifinales se decidiese en los penales, donde ya había brillado en octavos con tres disparos atajados a Japón. Esta vez solo necesitó uno, a Rodrygo, y Marquinhos, estrellando su tiro en el palo, hizo el resto.

Al comienzo de la prórroga, Neymar igualó a Pelé como máximo goleador de la selección brasileña con un gol que parecía acabar con la resistencia croata y de un Livakovic que hasta ese minuto 105+1 había sido un muro infranqueable para los brasileños.

Poco antes de llegar al descanso de la prórroga, cuando la «torcida» ya se temía tenerse que jugar la clasificación para semifinales en una tanda de penales, siempre imprevisible, Neymar liberó durante un tiempo la tensión que se apoderaba de todo el pueblo «verdeamarelo».

Recogió una pelota en la zona de tres cuartos y con dos paredes consecutivas, con Rodrygo y Lucas Paquetá, se plantó solo ante Dominik Livakovic, al que superó con un regate y mandó la pelota a la red, haciendo estallar de júbilo a la mayoría de las casi 44.000 personas presentes en el Education City de Doha.

Era la tercera vez en el encuentro que el delantero del París SG se quedaba solo delante del arquero balcánico, que le había ganado los dos primeros duelos, ambos en la segunda parte.

Nueve atajadas

El portero del Dínamo de Zagreb, que ya había sido el héroe en los octavos de final al detener tres penales a Japón en la tanda decisiva para dar la clasificación a su equipo, se había convertido hasta ese momento de la prórroga en un muro infranqueable para los brasileños, y en la tabla de salvación para su equipo con ocho atajadas de mérito que llevaron el encuentro al tiempo extra.

Tercer portero en el Mundial de Rusia, donde Croacia logró la gesta de llegar a la final (perdida contra Francia por 4-2), Livakovic (27 años) aprendió y fue madurando junto a la vieja guardia y aprovechó la retirada de Danijel Subasic para hacerse con la titularidad.

Muro inquebrantable para los brasileños

Este viernes se convirtió en un muro infranqueable para los brasileños, que lo intentaron desde todas las posiciones. Vinicius Jr lo probó con un disparo de rosca desde el vértice del área que atajó sin más problemas Livakovic al comienzo del partido (5).

Desde una posición cercana atajó también un lanzamiento de golpe franco directo de Neymar poco antes de llegar a la pausa (41), un preludio de lo que iba a ser el segundo tiempo, que arrancó con una atajada de reflejos, al sacar con el pie un rechace de Josko Gvardiol a centro de Éder Militao (47).

También con el pie le sacó un mano a mano con Neymar, después de que el «10» de la Seleçao se hubiese quedado solo tras recibir un pase de Richarlison (55) y en el 66 detuvo otro remate de Lucas Paquetá.

A poco más de un cuarto de hora para el final del tiempo reglamentado, las esperanzas de Brasil volvían a estrellarse en el cuerpo de un Livakovic imperial, ganando en el mano a mano otra vez a Neymar, a quien Richarlison le había dejado de nuevo solo ante el guardameta croata.

Otra vez decisivo en los penales

En el 80 volvió a atajar un disparo desde la frontal de Lucas Paquetá y en la última jugada antes de la prórroga, volvió a repetir acción en un tiro desde fuera del área de Antony, uno de los pocos que intentó Brasil para sorprender al meta balcánico.

Gracias a sus atajadas, Croacia provocó la prórroga, un ejercicio que conoce bien puesto que en los últimos cuatro grandes campeonatos (Mundial y Eurocopa), la ‘Vatreni’ ha disputado ocho partidos de eliminación directa y solo en uno no llegó a la prórroga (la final mundialista en 2018).

Cuando todo parecía perdido para los hombres de Zlatko Dalic, con el gol de Neymar al comienzo de la prórroga, Bruno Petkovic volvía a poner la igualada en el marcador (116) y fue entonces cuando apareció de nuevo Livakovic, deteniendo un disparo a bocajarro de Casemiro para llevar la clasificación a los penales, donde al parar el primer lanzamiento de Rodrygo ya dejó claro que iba a ser su noche otra vez.

Croatia will face Argentina or the Netherlands in the semis

Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic had a heck of a game as Brazil had to exit from the quarter-finals for a second successive time, against their European counterparts, losing 4-2 in the shootout in Doha Friday.

But Brazil took the lead on the eve of half time of the extra period thanks to a wonderful goal by their star Neymar, but eventually the Selecao failed to keep the advantage as Bruno Petkovic restored the balance for Croatia in the 116th minute to take the game further.

Murquinhos missed from the spot as he hit the post and gave early advantage to Croatia, while Luka Modric and his men scored all the penalties and didn’t give any chance to Brazil to come back.

Croatia, on the other hand, made two changes in the starting line-up that won against Japan.

Borna Sosa returned from illness to replace Borna Barisic, while midfielder Mario Pasalic was introduced instead of forward Petkovic.

The Croats, wearing distinctive red-and-white checkerboard tops, started the game brighter of the two sides with continuous pressing, and didn’t give the Men in Yellow enough scope to flourish with their rhythmic play.

In the third minute, last edition’s runners-up showed some early signs that they are here to fight toe to toe when Mateo Kovacic on the left side dribbled and deceived Casemiro to earn a free kick that saw the ball enter the box at Marcelo Brozovic, who failed to make the most of the opportunity.

Rushing in from the left wing, the Real Madrid man exchanged a pass with Richarlison and aimed a curler towards the bottom left that was blocked by Dejan Lovren, followed by a Neymar shot ending straight at the hands of Dominik Livakovic.

The players went to the tunnel with the score locked at 0-0 after the first half, and the game was evenly balanced.

Brazil after the break came to the field in refreshing mood and showed some difference in tactics with instant impacts, attacking heavily in front of the Croatian post.

In the 48th minute, Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol blocked from point blank range to frustrate Neymar after some fine work by Vinicius on the left side.

Seven minutes later, getting the ball after an elegant run by Richarlison down inside-left channel, Neymar glided to the left-hand corner but couldn’t go past Livakovic, who again saved Croatia brilliantly from a one-on-one chance when Lucas Paqueta in the 66th minute got the ball open and free, resulting from a misunderstanding among a couple of Croatian defenders.

Ten minutes later, Neymar again failed at the hands of the Dinamo Zagreb goalkeeper when freshly-introduced Rodrygo Goes and Richarlison combined to release the ball to their No 10 down the inside-left channel.

Antony, replacing Raphinha, troubled the Croats’ defence with his pace and sent a ball to his Manchester United clubmate Casemiro in the 80th minute.

But his cross found Rodrygo who then cut back for Paqueta, but Livakovic was on hand to deny him again.

After another goalless half, the game went into extra time and Brazil started the phase the way they finished the stipulated time; attacking on the final third.

Croatia captain Modric showed some wonderful skills in the eighth minute of extra time when the 37-year old nutmegged Guilherme Pedro out on the right.

Three minutes later, Pedro attempted a spectacular overhead kick, only to be thwarted by Livakovic.

And then at the very end of the half time of the extra period, Neymar gave the Selecao the moment of sheer joy after exchanging passes with Rodrygo and Pedro, then beating Livakovic on the right from a tight angle.

But Brazil weren’t able to hold onto the lead as Mislav Orsic, with the help of Modric in the left side found Petkovic in the box.

Petkovic took the shot first time, and a slight deflection from Marquinhos took it past the diving Alisson Becker, sparking Croatian celebrations.
