Abogado independiente revisará caso de pena de muerte de Glossip / Independent Counsel to review Glossip death penalty case

OKLAHOMA CITY – El fiscal general de Oklahoma, Gentner Drummond, ha anunciado que ha encargado a un abogado independiente la revisión exhaustiva de la condena a muerte de Richard Glossip. Glossip fue condenado a muerte por el asesinato de Barry Van Treese en 1997 en Oklahoma City, pero muchas personas -entre ellas un número creciente de políticos estatales tanto demócratas como republicanos- creen que Glossip es inocente.

Entre los partidarios locales más destacados de Glossip se encuentra el representante estatal Kevin McDugle, republicano de Broken Arrow. Al solicitar una nueva audiencia sobre el caso Glossip el pasado octubre, McDugle fue inequívoco en su creencia de que el caso del Estado contra Glossip no se basa en pruebas sólidas.

“Si la gente va a tener fe en el proceso judicial, debe saber que Oklahoma defiende lo que es correcto, no ganar a toda costa. Eso incluye admitir cuando nos equivocamos e intentar corregir los errores cometidos en el pasado. Así es como protegemos a nuestros ciudadanos”, dijo McDugle entonces. “Sí, tengo la esperanza de que la corte de apelaciones en lo penal vea lo que yo veo y fije una nueva audiencia. El Estado simplemente no tiene la evidencia contra Richard Glossip, y saben que quedará libre si realmente se fija una audiencia”.

Drummond dijo que ha contratado al ex fiscal Rex Duncan para que revise todos los aspectos de la investigación, el juicio, la sentencia y el proceso de apelación.

“Como mi oficina representará al Estado en la audiencia de clemencia, es mi responsabilidad garantizar que estamos respondiendo adecuadamente a todas las pruebas que se han presentado a través de la condena y el encarcelamiento del Sr. Glossip”, dijo Drummond. “Las circunstancias que rodean este caso exigen una revisión exhaustiva. Aunque confío en nuestro sistema judicial, eso no me permite ignorar las pruebas. Esta revisión ayuda a garantizar que se haga justicia, tanto a la familia Van Treese como al acusado”.

Drummond habló personalmente con varios miembros de la familia Van Treese antes de contratar al abogado independiente.

“Siempre seguiré centrado en las familias de las víctimas, que han sufrido pérdidas inimaginables y esperan justicia para sus seres queridos”, declaró.

El abogado independiente Rex Duncan es coronel (retirado) de la guardia nacional del ejército de Oklahoma y fue fiscal del distrito de los condados de Osage y Pawnee de 2011 a 2019. Antes de ese tiempo, representó al distrito 35 de la cámara de representantes de Oklahoma.

Independent Counsel to review Glossip death penalty case

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced that he has directed an independent counsel to conduct a comprehensive review of Richard Glossip’s murder conviction and death sentence. Glossip was sentenced to death for the 1997 murder of Barry Van Treese in Oklahoma City, but many people – including a growing number of both Democratic and Republican state politicians – believe Glossip is innocent.

Among Glossip’s most prominent local supporters is State Representative Kevin McDugle, R-Broken Arrow. When calling for a new hearing into the Glossip case last October, McDugle was unequivocal in his belief that the state’s case against Glossip is not based on solid evidence.

“If people are going to have faith in the legal process, they need to know that Oklahoma stands for what is right, not winning at all costs. That includes admitting when we are wrong and trying to right the wrongs made in the past. That’s how we protect our citizens,” McDugle said at the time. “Yes, I am hopeful the Court of Criminal Appeals will see what I see and set a new hearing.  The State simply does not have the evidence against Richard Glossip, and they know he will go free if a hearing is actually set.”

Drummond said he has retained former prosecutor Rex Duncan to review all aspects of the investigation, trial, sentencing and appeals process.

“As my office will represent the State at the clemency hearing, it is my responsibility to ensure that we are appropriately responding to all evidence that has been presented through Mr. Glossip’s conviction and incarceration,” Drummond said. “Circumstances surrounding this case necessitate a thorough review. While I am confident in our judicial system, that does not allow me to ignore evidence. This review helps ensure that justice is served, both to the Van Treese family and the accused.”

Drummond spoke personally with various members of the Van Treese family prior to engaging the independent counsel.

“I always will remain focused on the families of victims, who have suffered unimaginable loss and await justice for their loved ones,” he said.

Independent Counsel Rex Duncan is a Colonel (retired) in the Oklahoma Army National Guard and served as District Attorney of Osage and Pawnee Counties from 2011 to 2019. Prior to that time, he represented House District 35 in the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
