CHOTEAU, Okla. — The unexpected death of a beloved elementary school teacher following a car crash on Wednesday has hit the Choteau-Mazie school district hard.

Work colleagues, and those closest to her, are struggling to come to terms with the death of 51-year-old Shelly Snodgrass.

Her significant other, Jeff Kimball, confirmed she died on Thursday from injuries suffered in a car crash early Wednesday evening. The crash took place between 169th and 21st on the Broken Arrow Expressway in Tulsa.

On Friday afternoon, FOX23 learned more about the elementary school teacher who was finishing up her sixteenth year of teaching at Chouteau Elementary School.

“So you can see how organized she is, and so she made sure that all of her students met their goals,” explained Tamara Bryan, the principal at Choteau Elementary School during a walk through of Shelly’s second grade classroom.

She said, while she was quiet in her demeanor, teachers looked to Snodgrass as a leader.

“The Shelly-sized hole to fill is huge, in our school, in our community, she’s just an amazing lady,” said Superintendent Lori Helton, who oversees the Chouteau-Mazie Public Schools.

Helton said after learning of the initial crash on Wednesday, students made cards for their beloved teacher. Learning of her death has been hard.

Parent and Pre-K aide Ashley Croft described the phone call she received from her 10-year-old daughter Avery. The fifth grader had Shelly Snodgrass as her teacher when she was in the second grade.

“She called me and I couldn’t even understand what she was saying,” Croft said. “She just said, ‘Miss Snodgrass had a wreck, and she’s not here anymore.’ She said, ‘They’ve sent counselors to talk with us but, you know, I need you mom.’”

Croft said Snodgrass was also a devoted mom to her two daughters and 25-year-old son Bradley who has special needs.

Her devotion to family is something Bryan also talked about.

“She would run with him, and the team that she ran with, they would also help push him through the races,” she said, “so she’s a woman to be admired in the way that she took care of her family.”

Snodgrass graduated from Pryor High School in 1989. Her partner, Jeff, said she attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah while raising her kids.

He described her as a selfless individual who always worried about everyone except herself.

FOX23 has also learned Snodgrass was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Chouteau Elementary school will have counselors and ministers on campus next week and classes will be canceled on Tuesday, April 11.

That will allow students and staff the opportunity to attend the funeral service for Snodgrass. It will be held at 2 p.m. inside the Wildcats gymnasium.

CHOTEAU, Okla. — La inesperada muerte de una querida maestra de escuela primaria luego de un accidente automovilístico el miércoles ha afectado duramente al distrito escolar de Choteau-Mazie.

Sus compañeros de trabajo y sus allegados luchan por aceptar la muerte de Shelly Snodgrass, de 51 años.

Su pareja, Jeff Kimball, confirmó que murió el jueves a causa de las lesiones sufridas en un accidente automovilístico el miércoles por la noche. El accidente tuvo lugar entre las calles 169 y 21 en Broken Arrow Expressway en Tulsa.

El viernes por la tarde, FOX23 aprendió más sobre la maestra de escuela primaria que estaba terminando su decimosexto año de enseñanza en la Escuela Primaria Chouteau.

La madre y asistente de Pre-K, Ashley Croft, describió la llamada telefónica que recibió de su hija Avery, de 10 años. La alumna de quinto grado tuvo a Shelly Snodgrass como maestra cuando estaba en segundo grado.

“Ella me llamó y ni siquiera podía entender lo que estaba diciendo”, dijo Croft. “Ella simplemente dijo: ‘La señorita Snodgrass tuvo un accidente y ya no está aquí’. Ella dijo: ‘Han enviado consejeros para hablar con nosotros, pero, ya sabes, te necesito, mamá'”.

Croft dijo que Snodgrass también era una madre dedicada a sus dos hijas y a su hijo Bradley, de 25 años, que tiene necesidades especiales.

Su devoción por la familia es algo de lo que Bryan también habló.

“Ella correría con él, y el equipo con el que corría, también lo ayudarían a superar las carreras”, dijo, “así que es una mujer a la que admirar por la forma en que cuidó de su familia”.

Snodgrass se graduó de la escuela secundaria Pryor en 1989. Su pareja, Jeff, dijo que asistió a la Universidad Estatal del Noreste en Tahlequah mientras criaba a sus hijos.

Él la describió como una persona desinteresada que siempre se preocupaba por todos excepto por ella misma.

FOX23 también supo que Snodgrass era un veterano del ejército de los EE. UU.

La escuela primaria Chouteau tendrá consejeros y ministros en el campus la próxima semana y las clases se cancelarán el martes 11 de abril.

Eso permitirá a los estudiantes y al personal la oportunidad de asistir al funeral de Snodgrass. Se realizará a las 14 hs. dentro del gimnasio Wildcats.
