Four different goal scorers powered Sporting Kansas City to victory in a devastating 4-1 away win over archrival St. Louis City SC in Game 1 of the Western Conference First Round Best-of-3 series on Sunday night at cold and rainy CityPar

With cold temperatures and rain, 27 minutes of the first half were enough for Sporting KC to take the lead on the scoreboard. Puligol made an effort to keep an almost lost ball, which eventually ended up in Ndenbe’s legs to make it 1-0 for Sporting KC.

St. Louis responded 60 seconds later and managed to tie, Alan Pulido could not clear a ball that could have been a penalty but the well-placed referee let the play continue and Parker came on to equalize 1-1 for St. Louis SC.

Sporting KC continued to overcome and took advantage of the opportunities presented with two goals at 36 and 39 by Walter and Kinda and put Peter Vermes and limited company ahead 3-1 and thus they went to halftime.

In the second half, Salloi would seal the 4-1 at minute 61, and with this the unexpected victory for San Luis at home.

Peter Vermes, Technical Director of Sporting KC said “I think from the opening whistle, we were knocking on the door. We had some very good counters. We were maybe just off with the final pass or maybe we should have passed it somewhere else. But we had the actions in us. The goals were tremendous goals against that goalkeeper too because I have a tremendous amount of respect for him. I think he is a fantastic goalkeeper. He has done well all season. But those were just really, really good goals by us in today’s game. He’s got great distribution. It helped us and I think it helped us in a lot of ways. They scored pretty quickly right after. We could have easily lost confidence quickly, especially being away from home. They have made this into a really, really tough place to play. Their fans are into it. That got their fans into it. But for us to get two more goals and then get in and just keep working towards it was big for us, obviously.” Vermes concluded.

Sporting KC has the opportunity to close at home next Sunday, November 5 when it hosts St. Louis City  SC in the second of three series games. The game is scheduled for 4:00 P.M. at Children’s Mercy Park.
