Community Health Connection (CHC) abrió su clínica más nueva en East Tulsa hace casi siete meses, pero debido a preocupaciones de seguridad durante la pandemia de coronavirus, la ceremonia oficial de corte de cinta se retrasó hasta esta semana. El alcalde de Tulsa, G.T. Bynum estuvo entre los asistentes el lunes para dar la bienvenida a la Clínica Ellen Ochoa de CHC, que se encuentra en los terrenos de la escuela primaria Ellen Ochoa en 12020 E. 31st St.

La gran mayoría de los pacientes de la clínica son hispanos, un grupo que históricamente está desatendido en lo que respecta a la atención médica. CHC, con la ayuda de la ciudad de Tulsa y otros socios locales, espera cambiar esa situación.

“Esta instalación que dedicamos hoy es parte de nuestra Iniciativa New Tulsans”, dijo Bynum, “y queremos construir una ciudad que sea la mejor ciudad de Estados Unidos para nuestra comunidad de inmigrantes y para nuestra comunidad hispana”.

El director ejecutivo de Community Health Connection, Jim McCarthy, dijo que la clínica ha estado atendiendo a pacientes durante algún tiempo, pero retrasaron la celebración que normalmente generaría una nueva instalación importante como esta para mantener a todos a salvo.

“Estamos encantados de tener finalmente un corte de cinta aquí en la Clínica Ellen Ochoa”, dijo McCarthy a La Semana. “Hemos estado abiertos durante 197 días y pensamos que pronto la pandemia terminaría y podríamos hacer que todos entraran, pero simplemente no queríamos esperar más. Nuestros pacientes han estado encantados cuando han venido a la clínica para ver lo maravilloso que es y cómo ahora la tenemos completamente equipada con nuestros médicos, enfermeras, dentistas, psicólogos clínicos y trabajadores sociales”.

McCarthy dijo que la nueva instalación es dos veces más grande que la clínica 6th and Lewis, y ya está operando en un horario completo.

“La demanda aquí, especialmente en el lado este de Tulsa, es simplemente tremenda”, dijo.

Al igual que las otras ubicaciones de CHC, la clínica Ellen Ochoa ofrece servicios de atención médica de calidad en una escala variable, y lo hace de forma bilingüe y con sensibilidad cultural. McCarthy describió el apoyo de la comunidad hispana de Tulsa como “excelente”.

“Esta es un área con una alta población de hispanos”, explicó McCarthy. “Y aquí en Ellen Ochoa alrededor del 80% de nuestros empleados son bilingües y biculturales, por lo que los pacientes pueden ser atendidos en su primer idioma si es el español, y hemos descubierto que cuando nos comunicamos en su primer idioma, el paciente entiende mejor, hace preguntas más importantes, y cumple mejor con el curso del tratamiento porque tiene muy claro lo que debe hacerse”.

Uno de los servicios más oportunos en la clínica Ellen Ochoa este otoño es impulsar las pruebas rápidas de COVID-19, que se ofrecen de forma gratuita.

“Puede obtener sus resultados en menos de 30 minutos y ahora estamos comenzando a ofrecer vacunas contra la gripe gratis”, dijo McCarthy. “Estamos alentando a todos a que se vacunen contra la influenza porque este no es el año en el que usted quiere tener la influenza y posiblemente también contraer COVID”.

Ellen Ochoa clinic holds ribbon cutting ceremony

Community Health Connection (CHC) opened its newest clinic in East Tulsa nearly seven months ago, but due to safety concerns during the coronavirus pandemic the official ribbon cutting ceremony was delayed until this week. Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum was among those in attendance Monday to welcome CHC’s Ellen Ochoa Clinic, which is on the grounds of Ellen Ochoa Elementary school at 12020 E. 31st St.

The vast majority of the clinic’s patients are Hispanic, a group that historically is underserved when it comes to health care. CHC, with help from the City of Tulsa and other local partners, hopes to change that.

“This facility that we’re dedicating today is part of our New Tulsans Initiative,” Bynum said, “and we want to build a city that is the best city in America for our immigrant community and for our Hispanic Community.”

Community Health Connection’s CEO, Jim McCarthy, said the clinic has been seeing patients for some time, but held off on the fanfare an important new facility such as this would normally generate in order to keep everyone safe.

“We are thrilled to finally have a ribbon-cutting here at Ellen Ochoa Clinic,” McCarthy told La Semana. “We have been open for 197 days and we thought soon the pandemic will end and we can have everyone come in, but we just didn’t want to wait anymore. Our patients have been thrilled as they have come to the clinic to see how wonderful it is and how now we have it fully staffed with our doctors and nurses and dentists and clinical psychologists and social workers.”

McCarthy said the new facility is twice as large as the 6^th and Lewis clinic, and is already operating on a full schedule.

“The demand here, especially on the east side of Tulsa, is just terrific,” he said.

Like CHC’s other locations, the Ellen Ochoa clinic offers quality health care services on a sliding scale, and does so bilingually and with cultural sensitivity. McCarthy described the support from Tulsa’s Hispanic community as “excellent.”

“This is an area with a high population of Hispanics,” McCarthy explained. “And here in Ellen Ochoa about 80% of our employees are bilingual and bicultural, so the patients can be served in their first language if it’s Spanish, and we have found that when we communicate in their first language the patient understands better, the patient asks more important questions, and the patient is more compliant with the course of treatment because it’s very clear to them what needs to be done.”

One of the most timely services at Ellen Ochoa clinic this fall is drive up rapid testing for COVID-19, which is offered free of charge.

“You can get your results in less than 30 minutes and now we’re starting to offer free flu vaccinations,” McCarthy said. “We’re encouraging everyone to get their flu vaccine because this is not the not the year you want to be down with the flu and possibly also contract COVID.”
