Café y una segunda oportunidad / Coffee and a second chance

A algunas personas les gusta disfrutar de un bollo o pan dulce con su café, pero lo especial de la casa que se sirve en She Brews en el histórico distrito de Kendall Whittier de Tulsa es algo verdaderamente único: segundas oportunidades.

Rhonda Bear fundó She Brews Coffee Shop en 2012 “para brindar a la comunidad de Claremore un excelente café y ayudar a apoyar una serie de buenas causas que son muy queridas por Rhonda”, una visión que recientemente se expandió a Tulsa con la apertura de She Brews en 1 N Lewis, al otro lado de la calle de Whittier Square.

Tisha Boyd, gerente general de She Brews, explicó la misión del café durante una visita reciente a La Semana.

“De hecho, trabajamos con mujeres en transición y proporcionamos empleos, por lo que es una parte de un ministerio de tres areas”, dijo Boyd. “Tenemos los ministerios de extensión del hogar, que es una transición para las mujeres que salen de una situación difícil, de la calle o la cárcel. Y luego está She Brews, que proporciona empleo para dicha transición, y luego tenemos Stand in the Gap en el que les proporcionamos mentoras para ayudarlas”.

Oklahoma lidera al país en el encarcelamiento de mujeres, y She Brews está haciendo todo lo posible para asegurarse de que cuando sean liberadas, tengan las herramientas que necesitan para tener éxito en la vida y no terminar volviendo por la puerta giratoria que con demasiada frecuencia caracteriza a la sistema penitenciario.

Al igual que Bear, la propia Boyd no es ajena a la adicción y el encarcelamiento, ya que fue víctima de la adicción a los opioides después de una lesión en la espalda y quedó atrapada en un estilo de vida de venta de drogas para mantener su hábito. Mientras estaba en prisión, Boyd obtuvo su GED y comenzó a estudiar la Biblia. Le presentaron a Bear, quien para ese entonces visitaba regularmente la prisión como parte de su ministerio, y por primera vez en mucho tiempo supo que las cosas podrían mejorar.

“Ella fue una inspiración para mí”, recuerda Boyd. “Ella estuvo en prisión, luego salió y estaba bien ayudando a los demás, lo que me inspiró. Pensé que si ella podía hacerlo yo podía hacerlo, así que comencé a trabajar con ella mientras estaba encarcelada”.

Después de su liberación en abril de este año, Boyd se fue a trabajar para She Brews, y cuando se abrió la nueva tienda en Tulsa, Bear le pidió a Boyd que la dirigiera.

Todas las mujeres que trabajan en She Brews son parte del programa de transición y se les anima a compartir sus testimonios con los clientes y entre sí.

She Brews es una organización sin fines de lucro, y todos los ingresos se destinan actualmente a la nómina. Boyd es optimista de que un nuevo tostador de café en el lugar conducirá a ventas de café a granel a otras empresas, lo que luego ayudará a financiar los hogares de transición del ministerio y otros esfuerzos de alcance.

Coffee and a second chance

Some people like to enjoy a scone or pan dulce with their coffee, but the special of the house being served up at She Brews in Tulsa’s historic Kendall Whittier district is something truly unique – second chances.

Rhonda Bear started She Brews Coffee Shop in 2012 “to provide the Claremore community with great coffee and help support a number of good causes that are dear to Rhonda’s heart,” a vision that recently expanded to Tulsa with the opening of She Brews at 1 N. Lewis, just across the street from Whittier Square.

Tisha Boyd, general manager of She Brews, explained the café’s mission during a recent visit with La Semana.

“We actually work with women in transition and we provide jobs, so it’s one part of a three-part ministry,” Boyd said. “We have His House Outreach Ministries, which is transitional living for women coming out of a tough situation, off the street or incarceration. And then you have She Brews which provides employment for their transition, and then we have Stand in the Gap in which we give the women mentors to help them.”

Oklahoma leads the nation in incarcerating women, and She Brews is doing what it can to make sure that when released from incarceration, women have the tools they need to succeed in life and not wind up going back through the revolving door that too often characterizes the prison system.

Like Bear, Boyd herself is no stranger to addiction and incarceration, having fallen victim to opioid addiction following a back injury and getting trapped in a lifestyle of selling drugs to support her habit. While in prison, Boyd got her GED and began studying the bible. She was introduced to Bear, who by then was regularly visiting the prison as part of her ministry, and for the first time in a while she knew things could get better.

“She was an inspiration to me,” Boyd recalled. “She was in prison, then got out and was doing well helping others, which inspired me. I thought if she can do it I can do it, so I started working with her while I was incarcerated.”

After her release in April of this year, Boyd went to work for She Brews, and when the new location in Tulsa opened up, Bear asked Boyd to run it.

All the women who work at She Brews are part of the transition program and are encouraged to share their testimonials with customers and each other.

She Brews is a non-profit organization, with all proceeds currently going to payroll. Boyd is optimistic that a new on site coffee roaster will lead to bulk coffee sales to other businesses, which will then help fund the ministry’s transitional homes and other outreach efforts.
