Un 4 de julio mortal / A deadly 4th of July

Mientras Estados Unidos celebraba su 245 ° año de independencia el fin de semana pasado, la libertad de poseer armas de fuego cobró un alto precio, ya que al menos 233 estadounidenses perdieron la vida a causa de la violencia con armas de fuego durante un feriado particularmente mortal del 4 de julio. 14 de éstas acciones se definieron como “tiroteos masivos”, con cuatro o más víctimas, lo que convierte el fin de semana del cumpleaños de la nación en el peor con tiroteos masivos de este año.

A deadly 4^th of July

As the United States celebrated its 245^th year of independence this past weekend, the freedom to own firearms took a heavy toll as at least 233 Americans lost their lives to gun violence over a particularly deadly Fourth of July holiday. 14 shootings were defined as “mass shootings,” with four or more victims, making the nation’s birthday weekend the worst for mass shootings this year.

In addition to the 233 killed – a number that may increase as more statistics are analyzed by the Gun Violence Archive – 618 people were reported injured over the three day holiday weekend. This number is a decrease from the same period a year ago, when 314 Americans were killed by guns and 751 were injured.

As is the case over just about any weekend in this country, the majority of the shootings occurred in the nation’s larger cities such as Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, and Atlanta, but fatalities were reported in smaller cities as well, including Akron, Baton Rouge, El Paso, Indianapolis, Raleigh, and Shreveport.

26 people died in New York City and 18 were killed in Chicago in what is always one of the most difficult weekends of the year for law enforcement.

In Tulsa, no one was killed but three people were wounded in four separate shootings over the long weekend. In Oklahoma City, three people were wounded in three separate shootings. One person was killed in Wellston, just outside of Oklahoma City.

In Dallas, three people were killed and two others were injured when gunfire erupted at a neighborhood Fourth of July party. One of the injured was listed in critical condition. Eight people were wounded at a shooting at a car wash in neighboring Fort Worth on the same day.

12 people were shot, including one who died, at another block party in Toledo, Ohio.

So far this year, 22,663 people have died as a result of gun violence in this country. 10,321 were the victims of homicide, accidents, and defensive use of weapons, and 12,342 were the result of suicide.

2020 was the deadliest year for gun violence in decades, with 45,537 killed and 39,439 injured. This year is already on track to meet or exceed that number, but so far all attempts by President Biden to find legislative or regulatory ways to reduce gun violence have been met with strong resistance from Republicans and a handful of conservative Democrats.
