Pfizer dice que la tercera dosis de su vacuna ofrece una protección del 95,6% / Pfizer-BioNTech Booster Shot Restores Full Covid Protection
WASHINGTON.- La tercera dosis de la vacuna de Pfizer/BioNTech ha mostrado una protección del 95,6 % contra los contagios de covid-19 y se comporta de manera «segura y tolerable», informaron ambas empresas este jueves.
Pfizer y BioNTech llevaron a cabo un estudio cuando la variante delta, más contagiosa, estaba en pleno auge en el mundo, y con personas que habían recibido las dos dosis previas once meses atrás.
Esta vacuna recibió autorización para uso de emergencia en EE.UU., a mediados de diciembre con lo que posiblemente participaron en este análisis voluntarios que tomaron parte en los primeros ensayos del suero.
«Estos resultados ofrecen pruebas adicionales de los beneficios de las dosis de refuerzo, mientras tratamos de mantener a la gente bien protegida frente a este enfermedad», indicó el director de Pfizer, Albert Bourla, en un comunicado conjunto.
El estudio se realizó sobre una muestra de 10.000 personas en Estados Unidos, Brasil y Sudáfrica, la mitad de ellas con edades entre 16 y 55 años y una cuarta parte mayores de 65 años.
El consejero delegado de BioNTech, Ugur Sahin, aseguró que con estos hallazgos se demuestra que además «del acceso global a las vacunas para todos, las vacunas de refuerzo podrían jugar un papel importante para respaldar la contención de la pandemia y el regreso a la normalidad».
Se trata del primer estudio clínico que precisa la protección de las dosis adicionales, después de que varias investigaciones revelaran que la potencia de las primeras inyecciones de esta vacuna comienza a disiparse a partir de los seis meses.
En septiembre pasado, la agencia reguladora de EE.UU., autorizó el uso de emergencia de la dosis de refuerzo de Pfizer/BioNtech para personas de más de 65 años, con condiciones médicas previas o expuestas al coronavirus en su trabajo.
Estados Unidos espera poder comenzar a administrar dosis de Pfizer/BioNTech a niños de entre 5 y 11 años de edad a partir de noviembre, si las autoridades dan la luz verde en los próximos días.

Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE said a booster shot of their Covid-19 vaccine restored full protection in a large study, results that are likely to bolster the argument for giving a third dose more widely.
A booster was 95.6% effective against symptomatic Covid in the study, which followed 10,000 people aged 16 and older, the companies said in a statement Thursday. The fast-spreading delta variant was the predominate strain during the trial.
Pfizer shares fell 0.7% as of 10:09 a.m. in New York. BioNTech’s American depositary receipts gained 3.3%.
“We believe boosters have a critical role to play in addressing the ongoing public health threat of this pandemic,” Pfizer Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla said in a statement. The companies said they’ll share the data with health authorities in the U.S., Europe and elsewhere.
Regulators have wrestled with how widely to use boosters as the delta variant drives infection rates up. Some countries, such as Israel, are using boosters extensively. Many others — including the U.S. and much of Europe — have thus far come down on the side of a third dose for the elderly and other high-risk individuals. Exactly where to draw the line on who is high-risk has also been a matter of debate.
Half the trial participants got a booster, with five cases in that group over an average follow-up period of two and a half months. There were 109 cases in the group randomly assigned a placebo shot. The booster was just as safe as the original two-dose vaccine.
The trial results show that “booster vaccinations could play an important role in sustaining pandemic containment and a return to normalcy,” BioNTech CEO Ugur Sahin said.
Trial participants received a booster an average of 11 months after their second dose of the vaccine. They were an average of 53 years old, with slightly under one-quarter of the group older than age 65. Efficacy of the third shot was consistent across age groups and among people with pre-existing conditions, the companies said.
