Tulsa, OK- Dicen que en el speed dial de Fabián Waintal, están los números de Kevin Costner y Leo di Caprio, y cuando no atiende su celular, es porque está en una entrevista con algún famoso. Es que este periodista corre detrás de las estrellas de Hollywood hace más de treinta años y sólo tiene tiempo para las excentricidades del showbiz, aunque muchos de nosotros no sepamos bien quien es.

Waintal es un periodista argentino especialista en espectáculos que llegó a Hollywood como corresponsal en la década del 90. Trabajó durante toda su carrera con  los medios hispanos más reconocidos del mundo, desde la revista Gente hasta el diario ABC de España, El Espectador de Colombia y el Mercurio de Chile. Hoy, cubre la revista Vanidades y vende sus entrevistas como pan caliente porque él es quien está detrás de todos esos chismeríos que nos gustan leer. Pero lo que no muchos saben es que su trayectoria le valió convertirse en crítico de los Critics Choice Awards, donde tiene un puesto en el jurado.

La vida de Waintal nunca fue normal, estuvo marcada por el destino, una pizca de suerte y un sueño en movimiento, que se alcanzó con creces, ser periodista a toda costa. “No había terminado la secundaria cuando hice mi primera nota”, recordó. “Pero como viví la dictadura en argentina decidí no hacer política y meterme de lleno en espectáculos, para evitar problemas”, explicó sobre sus inicios en el mundo de la fama. Durante ese mismo tiempo, siendo entonces reportero de una revista de espectáculos en su país, tuvo la suerte de entrevistar a Stella Marís Medrano, una actriz reconocida por sus telenovelas, que años después se convertiría en su esposa. La industria del espectáculo le daba su primer regalo, una familia.

El segundo presente fue Hollywood, y la posibilidad de mudarse a Estados Unidos y cubrir los Oscars. “Tengo 33 años con los Oscars es un hito que hasta ahora ningún periodista hispano consiguió”, aseguró con orgullo,  a sabiendas de que tiene uno de los mejores trabajos del mundo, uno que lo lleva desde Cannes hasta Dubai, visitando los mejores festivales del séptimo arte y charlando con las estrellas.

Waintal conoce Hollywood desde adentro, y entiende que nada allí es lo que parece. “Hollywood es como un barrio cerrado donde solamente entran los que recomiendan a otro, los famosos salen muy poco, sólo para estrenos, no es como en otros países donde tienen una vida mas pública, porque al ser tan reconocidos tienen que estar dispuestos a que la gente se les acerque. Imaginate que estas en tu edificio y de repente todos los vecinos te quieren saludar y abrazar, hay que estar listo para que eso pase. En el estudio de cine es donde tienen la libertad real y nadie los molesta”, dijo sobre las estrellas.

“Cuando conocés a los famosos te das cuenta de que no querés ser famoso, porque tenés una cantidad de privacidades tremendas. Lo mejor que te puede pasar es que no te conozca nadie. Un día recuerdo que Johny Deep me dijo en una entrevista que le encantaría ir a disneylandia con sus hijos, pero no puede, y ¡es terrible!”, comentó el periodista.

Para Fabián, los famosos, son ante todo, seres humanos como cualquiera, con dos pequeñas particularidades, viven bajo condiciones de extrema privacidad y son endiosados por los demás mortales. No obstante, son personas, como el resto. “Recuerdo estar recién llegado a Estados Unidos y tener que hacerle una entrevista a Dustin Hoffman, que para mi es un genio. Yo pensaba que en el hotel me recibiría un asistente, y en cambio no, él mismo me abrió la puerta de su cuarto, me invitó a pasar y ¡hasta me preparo un café! . Eso te demuestra que las personas, mas allá de la fama son simplemente humanos, y cuánto más grandes más humildes son”, remarcó.

Waintal reconoce que su trabajo no es trabajo, porque realmente lo disfruta, y los actores siempre lo ayudan a tener material de sobra para no preocuparse por cómo escribir sus notas. “Soy un hombre de suerte porque ellos me hacen el trabajo mas fácil. Saben que le están hablando al espectador e intentan elaborar sus respuestas con anécdotas jugosas”, aseguró, como si él fuese una llave que nos abre las puertas, durante 15 minutos a las vidas ocultas de los famosos. “Soy como un psicólogo, que pregunta lo que quiere, y ellos contestan, eso es fabuloso”, reconoció.

Entre sus entrevistados mas recurrentes están Antonio Banderas, Tom Hanks, y Tom Cruise, pero sus andanzas lo llevaron a tomar mate con Vigo Mortensen y ¡hasta Salma Hayek!, entre otras curiosidades. Pero el trabajo también puede crear rispideces, como le sucedió con Kevin Spacey en una entrevista.

“Fue antes de que tuviera el problema con House of Cards, yo lo entrevisté por la película en la que actuaba con Kate Winslet. Y aprovechando la trama sobre las noticias falsas, le pregunté básicamente si era gay o no, y se enojó muchísimo . Me contestó ‘mind your fucking business ‘y no me quiso dar más entrevistas. Yo toqué el tema de la homosexualidad mucho antes de que haya sido público”, contó.

Waintal vive la vida de Hollywood como un espectador que tiene la posibilidad de mirar el show tras bambalinas y ver como se cuecen las habas, el privilegio de ser parte y no serlo al mismo tiempo, algo que hace que sus días nunca sean aburridos.

“Esta semana por ejemplo tengo que entrevistar a Javier Bardem y a Leo Di Caprio y después sigue la cosa con los Oscars y todo lo demás, esto nunca para”, dijo. Mientras sueña en grande y piensa en hacer documentales con sus entrevistas. “Me encantaría seguir a un personaje durante todo un mes y luego hacer un documental”, aseguró.

Si quieres conseguir lo que este periodista de famosos, sigue su consejo y pon manos a la obra: “Den el primer paso para buscar el sueño que soñamos, porque conseguir un trabajo que nos guste hace que no se convierta en un trabajo, y eso no tiene precio”, afirmó. Tulsa, OK- Some say that Fabian Waintal has Kevin Costner and Leo Di Caprio on speed dial, and when he doesn’t pick up the phone, it’s because he is busy interviewing a Hollywood star. This Argentinean journalist makes a living interviewing movie stars and for more than 30 years he has been gossiping about the eccentricities of showbusiness, even if we haven’t heard of him before.

Waintal first came to Hollywood in the 90’s as a correspondent, working for different media such as Gente Magazine, Spain’s ABC, and the Chilean journal “El Mercurio.” Today he works for Vanidades, and his interviews sell like hot cakes, because he oversees all tittle tattle that surrounds Hollywood life. But what’s most surprising is that his reputation helped him own a seat on the jury of the Critics Choice Awards, something only the starts can have.

Waintal’s life was never simple; it was from the start marked by destiny, illuminated with a bit of luck and dominated by a dream in action, becoming a journalist.

“I hadn’t finished secondary school when I wrote my first article,” he remembered. “But I chose celebrity life, because as I lived in Argentina during the years of the dictatorship, politics wasn’t an option, I needed to avoid trouble.”

In those early days, he met Stella Marís Medrano, a well-known soap opera actress in Argentina, who after an interview became his girlfriend and eventually, his wife. The entertainment industry gave him his first present, a family.

The second gift he did not expect was the possibility of moving to the US to cover the Oscars.

“I have been at the Oscars for 33 years, it is a milestone that no other Hispanic journalist has achieved so far,” he said proudly.

Waintal has one of the best jobs in the world, one that takes him from Cannes to Dubai enjoying the best of the industry and chatting with the stars.

This reporter knows Hollywood by heart and is conscient that there nothing is what it seems.

“Hollywood is like a closed neighborhood where the only ones that get in are those recommended by others,” he observed. “Famous people almost never go out, only for premieres, because in order to get out there they need to be willing to let people in, to be touched, and talked to and reached. Here is not like in other countries where movie stars have a more active public life. The only place an actor has real freedom is in the studio where he is not disturbed.”

“When you meet celebrities, you realize you don’t want to be famous because you have an enormous quantity of deprivations. The best thing that can happen is that nobody knows you. I remember one day while interviewing Johnny Deep he said he wanted to take his children to Disneyland, but it was impossible. And that sucks,” said the journalist.

Waintal believes famous people are just like any other human being, with two small peculiarities, they are almost always private and are deified by the rest of us mortals.

“When I first came to America I had to interview Dustin Hoffman, who is a real genius,” Waintan recalled. “I thought that an assistant would greet me at his hotel, but he opened the door of the room himself and even made me a coffee. This shows that people are just people, beyond fame, and the older they get the humbler.”

The reporter usually says his job is never a job because he enjoys it so much, and actors tend to make it easier on him, giving him enough material for writing any kind of article.

“I am a man of luck, because they always help me out. They know that speaking to me is like talking directly to their public and try to develop their ideas with juicy anecdotes,” he said, as if he was a key that opens the doors to the secret life of celebrities for 15 minutes.

“I am like a psychologist, who gets to ask whatever he wants, and they just answer, which is fabulous,” he acknowledged.

Among his recurrent celebrities and almost friends are Antonio Banderas, Tom Hanks, and Tom Cruise, but the roads of life made him drink Mate with Vigo Mortensen and even Salma Hayek. Still, work is work and sometimes it can cause hardship, which happened when he was interviewing Kevin Spacey.

“It was before he had the confrontation with Netflix and House of Cards, I was interviewing him for the movie he did with Kate Winslet, the life of David Gale, and basically used the plot to question his own sexuality. He got really mad and answered me: ‘mind your f**king business,’ and never again game me a meeting. I actually touched the conversation about his homosexuality way before he made it public,” he said.

Waintal lives Hollywood as an insider who has the chance of playing outside, he is a part of it and is not at the same time, which makes his days more than interesting.

“This week for instance I have to speak to Javier Bardem and Leo Di Caprio, and then come the Oscars and everything else. This never stops,” he explained.

Still, his restless mind dreams big and thinks of making documentaries someday, about those lives that make us so curious.

“I would love to follow a celebrity for a whole month and then make a documentary,” he said.

“Make the first step to achieve the goal, because finding a job we love makes the work go away, and that is priceless,” he stated.
