Morir por el sueño americano / Dying for the American Dream

Tres migrantes -una madre y sus dos hijos pequeños- perdieron trágicamente la vida intentando cruzar el Río Grande desde México hacia Eagle Pass, Texas, el pasado viernes, y muchos a ambos lados de la frontera afirman que las políticas del gobernador de Texas, Greg Abbott, son las culpables de las muertes.

El sábado por la tarde, el congresista Henry Cuellar, cuyo distrito se encuentra justo al sur de Eagle Pass, fue uno de los primeros en revelar lo sucedido. 

“La Patrulla Fronteriza tuvo conocimiento el viernes 12 de enero de 2024, aproximadamente a las 21:00 horas, de que un grupo de seis migrantes se encontraba en apuros mientras intentaban cruzar el río Grande. La Patrulla Fronteriza intentó ponerse en contacto con el Departamento Militar de Texas, la Guardia Nacional de Texas y el Puesto de Mando del DPS por teléfono para transmitir la información, pero no tuvieron éxito”, publicó Cuéllar en la plataforma de medios sociales X. “Los agentes de la Patrulla luego hicieron contacto físico con el Departamento Militar de Texas y la Guardia Nacional de Texas en la Puerta de Entrada del Parque Shelly y transmitieron verbalmente la información. Sin embargo, los soldados del Departamento Militar de Texas declararon que no permitirían el acceso a los migrantes -incluso en caso de emergencia- y que enviarían a un soldado para investigar la situación. A primera hora del sábado 13 de enero de 2024, los tres migrantes fueron recuperados por las autoridades mexicanas”.

El gobierno mexicano ha identificado a las víctimas como Victerma de la Sancha Cerros, de 33 años; Yorlei Rubí, de 10; y Jonathan Agustín Briones de la Sancha, de 8. Otros dos miembros de la familia sobrevivieron gracias a los esfuerzos de un equipo de rescate mexicano.

La gestión de la situación por parte de Texas suscitó la rápida condena de la Casa Blanca, que lleva varios meses enzarzada en una batalla legal con Abbott mientras el gobernador tejano sigue interfiriendo en el trabajo de los agentes federales de fronteras en lo que muchos consideran una maniobra política que, una vez más, ha tenido consecuencias mortales. Dos inmigrantes murieron el pasado mes de agosto no muy lejos del lugar de la tragedia de la semana pasada, el cuerpo sin vida de uno de ellos enredado en una barrera flotante que Abbott erigió ante las protestas del gobierno de Biden.

“Tres individuos se ahogaron”, escribió el domingo el consejero general del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional en una mordaz carta al fiscal general de Texas, Ken Paxton. “Texas ha demostrado que, incluso en las circunstancias más exigentes, no permitirá el acceso de la Patrulla Fronteriza a la frontera para llevar a cabo actividades de aplicación de la ley y de respuesta de emergencia”.

Domingo García es presidente de la Liga de Ciudadanos Latinoamericanos Unidos (LULAC), la organización latina de derechos civiles más antigua del país. García envió una carta a Jaime Esparza, fiscal federal en San Antonio, pidiendo que el FBI y el departamento de justicia investiguen formalmente las muertes y el papel de Abbott en la situación cada vez más peligrosa en la frontera.

“Corresponde a todos los niveles de gobierno proteger a las personas dentro de su jurisdicción, y cuando las acciones o políticas contravienen directamente este deber, es imperativo que rindan cuentas”, escribió García.

Abbott insiste en que la mujer y sus hijos “ya se habían ahogado” cuando se denegó el acceso a la zona a los agentes de aduanas, aunque no ha aportado pruebas que respalden esta cronología. A pocos sorprendió la falta de empatía del gobernador de Texas con las víctimas, especialmente a la luz de las declaraciones que hizo durante una entrevista la semana pasada, en la que Abbott lamentó no poder disparar a los inmigrantes que intentan cruzar la frontera, “porque la Administración Biden nos acusaría de asesinato”.

En declaraciones a Axios el domingo, el portavoz de la Casa Blanca, Angelo Fernández Hernández, dijo: “Mientras seguimos reuniendo datos sobre las circunstancias de estas trágicas muertes, una cosa está clara: las maniobras políticas del gobernador Abbott son crueles, inhumanas y peligrosas”. (La Semana)

Three migrants – a mother and her two young children – tragically lost their lives trying to cross the Rio Grande from Mexico into Eagle Pass, Texas last Friday, and many on both sides of the border claim that the policies of Texas Governor Greg Abbott are to blame for the deaths.

On Saturday afternoon, Congressman Henry Cuellar, whose district is just south of Eagle Pass, was among the first to reveal what had happened. 

“Border Patrol learned on Friday, January 12, 2024, at approximately 9:00 P.M. that a group of six migrants were in distress as they attempted to cross the Rio Grande River. Border Patrol attempted to contact the Texas Military Department, the Texas National Guard, and DPS Command Post by telephone to relay the information, but were unsuccessful,” Cuellar posted on the social media platform X. “Patrol agents then made physical contact with the Texas Military Department and the Texas National Guard at the Shelly Park Entrance Gate and verbally relayed the information. However, Texas Military Department soldiers stated they would not grant access to the migrants – even in the event of an emergency – and that they would send a soldier to investigate the situation. Earlier today, Saturday, January 13, 2024, the three

migrant bodies were recovered by Mexican authorities.”

The Mexican government has identified the victims as Victerma de la Sancha Cerros, 33; Yorlei Rubi, 10; and Jonathan Agustín Briones de la Sancha, 8. Two other family members survived, thanks to the efforts of a Mexican rescue team.

Texas’ handling of the situation drew quick condemnation from the White House, which has been locked in a legal battle with Abbott for several months as the Texas governor continues to interfere with the work of federal border agents in what many see as a political stunt which, once again, has yielded deadly consequences. Two migrants died last August not far from the scene of last week’s tragedy, one man’s lifeless body entangled in a floating barrier Abbott erected over the protestations of the Biden administration.

“Three individuals drowned,” the general counsel for the Department of Homeland Security wrote Sunday in a scathing letter to Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton. “Texas has demonstrated that even in the most exigent circumstances, it will not allow Border Patrol access to the border to conduct law enforcement and emergency response activities.”

Domingo Garcia is president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the nation’s oldest Latino civil rights organization. Garcia sent a letter to Jaime Esparza, the U.S. Attorney in San Antonio, asking for the FBI and the Department of Justice to formally investigate deaths and Abbott’s role in the increasingly dangerous situation at the border.

“It is incumbent upon all levels of government to protect individuals within their jurisdiction, and when actions or policies directly contravene this duty, it is imperative that they be held accountable,” Garcia wrote.

Abbott insists that the woman and her children had “already drowned” by the time customs agents were denied access to the area, although he has provided no evidence to support this timeline. Few were surprised by the Texas governor’s lack of empathy for the victims, especially in light of statements he made during an interview last week, in which Abbott lamented not being able to shoot migrants attempting to cross the border, “because the Biden Administration would charge us with murder.” 

Speaking to Axios on Sunday, White House spokesperson Angelo Fernández Hernández said, “While we continue to gather facts about the circumstances of these tragic deaths, one thing is clear: Governor Abbott’s political stunts are cruel, inhumane, and dangerous.” (La Semana)
