Community Health Connection (CHC), o La Conexión Médica en español, es ahora bien conocido como un lugar donde los residentes de Tulsa pueden obtener atención médica y dental asequible y de calidad, independientemente de su estatus migratorio o su capacidad de pago. También es ampliamente reconocido como un lugar donde los miembros de la comunidad hispana son bienvenidos en su propio idioma y en formas que son culturalmente sensibles. Pero lo que muchos no saben es lo que se necesita para que todo esto suceda, y durante los últimos 12 años el hombre detrás de la cortina que, junto con un personal increíblemente trabajador ha estado aparentemente haciendo magia, ha sido el director ejecutivo del CHC, Jim McCarthy. Este mes se abre un nuevo capítulo en la historia de la organización, ya que McCarthy se jubila y cede las riendas a la nueva directora general del CHC, Kate Neary.

En una agradable mañana de primavera, unos 10 días antes de su fiesta de jubilación, McCarthy se sentó con La Semana para reflexionar sobre su tiempo en el CHC y presentar a nuestros lectores a su sucesora.

Cuando McCarthy se unió por primera vez a Community Health Connection, la mayoría de los pacientes eran atendidos en las oficinas originales de CHC cerca de la 21 y Mingo, un laberinto de habitaciones en un espacio que necesitaba urgentemente una renovación. El nuevo centro, situado en la 3ª y Lewis, acababa de abrir sus puertas, y los médicos y el personal aún se estaban adaptando a las nuevas instalaciones.

“Ha sido divertido, y el crecimiento ha sido absolutamente increíble, fenomenal”, recuerda McCarthy. “Llegué en otoño de 2012 y teníamos unos 2.000 pacientes. Estábamos principalmente en la ubicación de la calle 21. Y esta [clínica de la 3ª y Lewis] acababa de abrir, y básicamente lo que hacíamos era medicina familiar, esos eran los proveedores que teníamos”.

Pero qué diferencia puede marcar una década. McCarthy dijo que el año pasado “atendimos a más de 15.000 pacientes en más de 50.000 consultas. Y eso es porque ahora tenemos planificación familiar, obstetricia, hacemos partos, tenemos pediatras, medicina de familia. Tenemos una línea completa de servicios dentales, pero no incluyendo dentaduras postizas”.

La expansión del CHC bajo el liderazgo de McCarthy incluye la incorporación de dos nuevas clínicas, una adyacente a la escuela primaria Ellen Ochoa en la 31 Este de Garnett, y una clínica satélite en el predio del centro de educación infantil Rosa Parks, en 13702 East 46th Place South.

Las dos clínicas principales también cuentan con farmacias de descuento, lo que permite a los pacientes que a menudo tienen hijos y tienen varios trabajos hacer un solo viaje en lugar de dos.

No es exagerado decir que el impacto de Community Health Connection en las vidas de las personas a las que atiende ha sido nada menos que transformador, y ahora que Neary toma el timón se están preparando más cambios interesantes. 

Ya se ha llegado a un acuerdo para que CHC se haga cargo de la clínica situada en el interior del edificio de Servicios Juveniles, en la 3ª y Madison, y se está estudiando la posibilidad de abrir una quinta sede al oeste, en una zona donde, según McCarthy, “hay una gran necesidad”.

Puede que Neary sea nueva en el CHC, pero lleva más de dos décadas en el mundo de las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro. Recientemente ha sido consejera delegada de Tulsa CARES, el mayor y más completo proveedor de atención y servicios sociales para personas con VIH y hepatitis C de Oklahoma, y anteriormente ocupó cargos ejecutivos en Planned Parenthood y H.O.P.E.

“Creo firmemente que mi principal tarea como directora general es cuidar de nuestro personal, de nuestras finanzas y de nuestra presencia en la comunidad y nuestra reputación”, explicó Neary. “Y creo que eso es increíblemente importante… Y todo eso se traduce en una mejor atención al paciente y en la retención de buenas personas en todos los niveles de la organización”.

A new era begins at Community Health Connection

Community Health Connection (CHC), or La Conexión Medica in Spanish, is by now well known as a place where Tulsa residents can obtain quality affordable health and dental care, regardless of their immigration status or their ability to pay. It is also widely recognized as a place where members of the Hispanic community are welcomed in their own language and in ways that are culturally sensitive. But what many may not be aware of is what it takes to make all of this happen, and for the past nearly 12 years the man behind the curtain who, along with an incredibly hard-working staff has been seemingly working magic, has been CHC’s Chief Executive Officer, Jim McCarthy. This month heralds a new chapter in the organization’s history, as McCarthy retires and hands over the reins to CHC’s new CEO, Kate Neary.

On a pleasant spring morning around 10 days before his retirement party, McCarthy sat down with La Semana to reflect on his time with CHC and to introduce our readers to his successor.

When McCarthy first joined Community Health Connection, most patients were being seen at CHC’s original offices near 21^st and Mingo, a labyrinth of rooms in a space badly in need of renovation. The new flagship location at 3^rd and Lewis had recently opened its doors, with physicians and staff still making the new facility their own.

“Well, it’s been fun, and the growth has just been absolutely amazing, phenomenal,” McCarthy recalled. “I came in the fall of 2012 and we had about 2,000 patients. We were primarily at the 21st street location. And this [3^rd and Lewis clinic] had just opened, and basically what we did was family medicine, that’s the providers we had.”

But what a difference a decade can make. McCarthy shared that last year, “we served over 15,000 patients in over 50,000 encounters. And that’s because we have now family planning, OB, we do deliveries, we have pediatricians, family medicine. We have a full line of dental services right up to, but not including dentures.”

“And we have an integrated behavioral health practice,” McCarthy continued, “which basically means that we are recognizing the importance of the interaction with your physical and mental health. And on top of that, we are very carefully monitoring the social determinants of health, which are your living environment.”

McCarthy faced challenges during his tenure as well. He steered the organization through the uncharted waters of the COVID19 pandemic, protecting his staff and emerging with a better informed patient community.

CHC’s expansion under McCarthy’s leadership includes the addition of two new clinics, one adjacent to Ellen Ochoa elementary school on 31^st East of Garnett, and a satellite clinic on the grounds of Rosa Parks Early Childhood Education Center, at 13702 East 46th Place South.

The two main clinics also boast discount pharmacies, allowing patients who often have kids and work multiple jobs to make just one trip instead of two.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that the impact of Community Health Connection on the lives of those it serves has been nothing short of transformative, and as Neary takes the helm more exciting changes are in the works. 

An agreement is now in place for CHC to take over the clinic located inside of the Youth Services building at 3^rd and Madison, and a fifth location to the West is being considered in an area where McCarthy says “there’s a high pocket of need.”

Neary may be new to CHC, but she has been a fixture in the non-profit world for over two decades. She most recently served as Chief Executive Officer for Tulsa CARES, the largest and most comprehensive provider of care and social services for people living with HIV and Hepatitis C in Oklahoma, and previously held executive positions with Planned Parenthood and H.O.P.E.

“I feel very strongly that my biggest job, I think, as CEO is to take care of our people, take care of our finances, and take care of our community presence and our reputation,” Neary explained. “And I think that’s incredibly important… And all that trickles down to better patient care and retention of good people at every level of the organization.”
